For two decades, Stellenbosch Reserve has celebrated one of South Africa’s most renowned wine regions through wines that are unmistakably Stellenbosch. What began as a single blend inspired by a shared love of the town has grown into a collection that reflects the diversity, character and enduring quality of its vineyards.
A wine inspired by home
The story began in 2005, when three lifelong friends, all born and raised in Stellenbosch, set out to create a wine that paid tribute to their hometown. Their vision was simple: to capture the essence of Stellenbosch in every bottle.
The maiden vintage followed in 2006 under the name The Stellenbosch Ridge. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it showcased the richness and versatility of the region.
In 2009, the wine evolved into a classic Bordeaux-style blend centred on Cabernet Sauvignon, the variety most closely associated with Stellenbosch. The outstanding 2009 vintage earned gold medals at Veritas, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and Sélection Mondiale de Vins, firmly establishing the brand among South Africa’s wine industry.
Growing with Stellenbosch
The next milestone came in 2013, when the brand became Stellenbosch Reserve, a name that reflected both its quality and its ambition. That same year, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon joined the range as single-varietal wines, highlighting the exceptional suitability of Stellenbosch for Bordeaux varieties.
The collection continued to evolve with purpose. Chardonnay was introduced in 2014, followed by a refreshed brand identity in 2017. Chenin Blanc and Syrah joined the portfolio in 2018, broadening the range with two varieties that have become synonymous with modern Stellenbosch. In 2019, Cinsault completed the collection, celebrating one of the Cape’s oldest and most exciting grape varieties.
A place to call home
In 2023, Stellenbosch Reserve found its physical home on the neighbouring farm to Rust en Vrede, on the slopes of the Helderberg. Surrounded by vineyards and mountain views, the estate brings together the wines, restaurant and tasting experiences in a setting that reflects the spirit of the brand.
Today, visitors can experience Stellenbosch Reserve not only through the wines, but through the hospitality, food and sense of place that have always been central to its story.
Looking ahead
Twenty years after its beginnings, Stellenbosch Reserve remains committed to showcasing the very best of Stellenbosch through wines that are elegant, approachable and true to their origin.
From one Bordeaux-inspired blend to a portfolio spanning the region’s most celebrated varieties, every bottle continues to honour the vision that started it all: to create wines that capture the character, generosity and timeless appeal of Stellenbosch.
